Creating Immersion, Creating Presence

For this assignment, Katherine and I decided to create an immersive experience that recreates the following situation: “A person looking down at the street through a spyglass telescope”.

We first used two pieces of A4 paper to make a “spyglass telescope”.

And then, we roll a small sized paper into a loop as a control unit of zooming in and out.

Then we found this 4K Live cam video of Time-square. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdUw5RdyZxI

Then we’re good to go! The experience goes as follows:

  • One person would look into the telescope, which points toward the Time-square live video.

  • As that person moves the paper loop (A zoom in and zoom out action), the other person would zoom in/zoom out the live video on the laptop synchronously.

We believe that the limitation of sight created by the paper telescope was one key factor that made this immersive experience work. Also, the ambient street sound and the camera angle of the live video were essential to this experience. But one thing that really created the feeling of immersion for us was simultaneously zooming in and out while rolling the paper loop. This little detail had made the whole experience more authentic and realistic.
